Bret,

Nice blog! It’s your birthday! Happy birthday from your family back home! We are proud of you, pilgrim! I saw a WWII vet today and looked him in the eye and said, “Thanks for freedom!” He presented a glowing smile in return. A similar message goes to you and your fellow walkers, “Thanks for standing up freedom”!

Enjoy your special day! 25, eh? We wish we could celebrate with you today, but we with you in thought and prayer!

Love,

Dad and Mom, Ryan and Abby

Remembering Freedom

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

Yesterday we strolled into the quaint town of Elk Mound and met a man doing stone work with his wife.  He stopped to tell us how his 92-year-old dad says, ” I remember when we used to have freedom in this country.”

This is a snapshot of our current reality.  That’s why it is important that we actively educatate our communities about our constitutional rights and their current violations.  We can’t let freedom be a pleasant memory of the past; we must fight to restore it.

A Mile Away

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

It couldn’t have been more than a mile away that it hit me.  It was over.  I wasn’t going to get up the next morning and walk with the guys.  Ouch.  The tears welled up.  They welled up again when I journaled in the airport and again when my sister picked me up at LAX.  I guess that’s what happens when you spend a week with men of truth and conviction.  You grow to love and respect them and to want nothing but the best for them.

I am back in California now thinking about the walkers and how very different and special each one is.  It’s amazing to witness a diverse group of men unite and carry an indispensable message of freedom to the people. I am thankful to have been a part.

Guys, thank you for your willingness to make a statement as you walk and share the freedom message.  My life has been enriched by your humility, honesty, wisdom, wealth of knowledge, compassion for others, and, of course, by your songs.  You have my utmost respect.

So to bright-eyed, childlike Mike; gentle and wise Jim; generous, tough-skinned and sweethearted Tony; Nick, who has yet to amaze himself; understated Cody; Grant, a man who attempts difficult things; lovable, crazy Brett; kind-hearted, encyclopedia-for-brains, man of grit, Rod; and all the rest of you men, keep up the good fight, and know that I will stand by you to the end of this battle.

Walk on, my friends!

Beautiful Morning in County X (Alyssa’s Blog)

Sunday, August 24th, 2008

This morning I was greeted by a green field and sun streaming through the trees - what a pleasant contrast to the truck stops. As I sit here typing at a picnic table, I realize how much I’ve grown to delight in, and respect, the men I am walking with. They have great minds and hearts, and I am going to miss them.

Yesterday’s highlights include Jim’s “Itten ditten little kitten …” skat, and our attempts to learn it; beautiful views, a bull scrimmage, talking about favorite books, walking upon a bustling bar of bikers, and finding Dave and Karen at Latigo and Lace. Our message is solid and it resonates with the people in county X. The citizens here have encouraged us with their political activism and involvement; we met two individuals who ran for the senate. Hopefully we’ve encouraged them as well.

All is well; walking with men of truth and conviction blesses me deeply.
